HAD A BLAST AT THE FRESHIE OCEAN SWIM

 A big congrats to all who swam with Salty Fit a couple of Sundays ago for the Barnie Mullins Swim at Freshie! It was a great day and sooo nice to be able to have a few sneaky beers after the race. Conditions were looking perfect as all the swimmers were perched at the start line waiting to take off and commence the ocean swim race. Thanks to some prior scoping of the beach the Salty Fit team located the rip (and some of the friendly the locals verified it!!) so most of us took advantage of it when it was time to race!

The first couple of waves of the gentlemen’s divisions took off with the glistening conditions but when it came to the ladies turn to race the swim conditions changed and the howling southerly hit and things got very choppy indeed.

Nonetheless, all the Salty Swimmers powered through and achieved some really great results. Regular training and dedication really do pay off. All the guys that did the swim have at least 2 to 3 training sessions a week both pool and ocean swim training on Friday mornings – those with consistency are getting great results – whether it be improved times or improved endurance in challenging conditions such as the Freshie swim. Well done everyone!!

Open water swimming can be very challenging especially if you’re a traditional pool swimmer. In order to fare well and enjoy your open water swim races, swimmers should really consider a combination of:

  • Pool Squad training (aka Lap Time sessions) – to build endurance, distance and speed;
  • Surf swimming (aka Face the Waves sessions) – for the exposure of moving water which builds strength, and constant changing surf conditions building confidence and awareness;
  • Regular stroke technique work (aka advance your style and build your style programs) – ever building efficiency in your stroke and even speed

 All this equates to at least 3 sessions per week and is a well rounded training regime for most. Of course the more sessions you add the faster & fitter simmer you become!

SALTY FIT TEAM SWIM @ BALMORAL THIS SUNDAY?? WHO’S IN??

The Balmoral Swim [enter using this link]
18th March 2018

Keep up the ocean swimming! The Balmoral Swim is a harbour swim so conditions should be calm! HAVE YOU TOLD US YOU’RE COMING??? For all veteran ocean swimmers there is a 5km swim, but for the rest of us who want a fun cruisey swim, the 1km is ideal!

Registrations for the 5km have to be done online (no race registrations), while the 1km you have until 9:30am on Sunday morning to register for a 10am start! It is a friendly, family-oriented event that is also raising funds for Children’s Cancer Institute Australia. 🙂

See you there!
